Volunteers needed for Union City Boy Scouts meeting

Tim Jones

Union City Baptist Church had a total of 60 people for the community soup supper last Saturday night. There were pinto beans, several different kinds of chili and some great desserts. While people were eating, some youths from the church provided a puppet show.

This may seem like the minutes of the last Monday’s Union City Ruritan meeting, but I am pleased to have so much news from local activities. The March meeting began with a presentation by Mike Whitaker who was accompanied by Mike Sexton. Whitaker explained the purpose and actions of the Patriot Guard Riders who believe in supporting the troops and have found some ways to do it. These men ride motor cycles and carry flags at funerals of military people when invited by the families. They also participate in “welcome home” events and “send off” rallies for military. The organization has 750 members in Kentucky with about 100 active members. More information is available on the Web site: www.patriotguard.org.

Club president, David Thurman, expressed appreciation to Mary Louise Sewell and Brenda Parke, who represented the Union City Homemakers. He called attention to the work done during the electric outage in early February when hundreds of meals were served to members of the community. Then the ladies presented the club with some needed kitchen items, including a large iron skillet and a boxed set of cookware.

Don Kidd was accepted as a new Ruritan member. Union City Road cleanup has been set for 8 a.m. Saturday, April 4. Club members and anyone in the community may help with this effort. The club will have a Relay for Life team and Marty Sewell is leading that project. Madison County Relay for Life is scheduled for June 19.

Donald Rhodus announced he is helping the local boy scouts build bluebird houses and volunteers are needed at next Tuesday’s scout meeting at 6 p.m. Contact Don at 369-5465.

The Ruritan Club sponsored a blood collection Tuesday and 22 pints were donated.

Union City Homemakers are making a cookbook. It will be available on Union City Day, May 16. If anyone wants to contribute recipes, send them to: Mary Sewell, 2854 Doylesville Road, Richmond, KY 40475. The deadline to turn in recipes is April 15.

Ruritan members are beginning to sell $5 raffle tickets for some great prizes. First place is a 32-inch flat screen TV, second is a camcorder, third is a digital camera and five $10 cash prizes. The drawing will be on Union City Day. If you want to buy tickets, call Billy Wall at 623-5049.

If you want to get with others to play some country and gospel music, bring your guitar, mandolin, fiddle, bass guitar, banjo or other instrument to Flatwoods Christian Church Fellowship Hall at 7 tonight. The church is located on College Hill Road at Waco. This gathering is open to everyone. For more information, call 314-5146.

Happy anniversary wishes go out to Rodney and Brenda Rose next Thursday, March 26.

Happy Birthday to Tina Hunter, Tyler Combs and Alisa Allen on Friday, Howard Estes on Saturday, Tim Jones on Sunday, Toots Wells on Monday, David Clark and Amanda Eades on Tuesday and Patrick Short on Thursday.

If you have news, call me at 623-3880 or e-mail drtech@roadrunner.com.
