Mother’s Day is this Sunday, don’t forget

Hello from Baldwin.
How is everyone’s week going? I hope that everyone is having a great one.

  • Afternoon delight at Mt. Pleasant Church
Hello everyone. I was glad to see that Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church was conducting a Sunday afternoon service. The parking lot of the 1875 white wood frame building was full. Cars were parked in the grass to the front and back of the church. The function of the church still holds its own. The services are always special, because they are not done on a regular Sunday schedule. As I drove by, I thought of an afternoon delight with such a crowd for such a grand church.

  • Union City Day scheduled May 17
Union City Day is coming soon. On Saturday, May 17, the village will come alive as people gather to have yard sales, listen to music, visit neighbors and other activities. Food will be available and various organizations will be present with displays and information.

  • Summer reading program starts
It’s late Sunday evening this first week of May — already — and it has slipped by so fast and it’s difficult to recall what I did and if I ever accomplished anything. The weather has been and very pleasing with a sunrise every morning that would take your breath away and give you a few minutes of joy not soon forgotten.

  • Volunteer fire department is keeping busy
    Hi!
We’re on the downward swing of spring. Can you believe it? If you ask me, I thing we just swing from winter to summer off and on, with barely a glimpse of spring (we’re either cold and rainy or summertime hot).

  • Successfully transplant vegetables
With springtime finally here, we turn our attention to the vegetable garden. Getting your transplants up and growing will give you some delicious homegrown produce in the months to come.
Transplanting gives a plant more space to develop, but it will temporarily stop growth, not stimulate it. Therefore, for successful transplanting, try to interrupt plant growth as little as possible.

  • Free event features national experts
“Entertaining, Educational and Informative — Just Great!”  — Springfield, Ill., beef producer.
“I liked your practical methods which anyone can use … how they save time and money, too. Also, your message about how we cattlemen can help the (beef) industry was very important. One of the top programs I have ever been to.” — Abingdon, Virginia cattleman.

These are just two comments from participants who have attended seminars by Stockmanship & Stewardship clinicians Curt Pate and Todd McCartney. Everyone who handles livestock will benefit from this unique educational program.

  • Your refund Is on the way!
Checks are in the mail! The U.S. Treasury began sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households last week. To receive a payment, taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, at least $3,000 income for 2007 and file a 2007 federal tax return.

  • Oriental collectibles
As a follow-up to last week’s column, I would like to spend some time discussing the collecting of Orientalia. While there doesn’t seem to be a great deal of interest in this collecting field in central Kentucky, I can tell you that nationwide there is certainly an explosion in the collecting of Oriental items.
By Oriental, I do not mean just Chinese or Japanese items. Collectibles from Korea, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and as far away as India are all sought by knowledgeable collectors.

  • Eastern library struggled for more books in early years
When Eastern Kentucky State Normal School & Teachers College was established by the Kentucky legislature in 1906, only a small, inadequate amount of tax money was appropriated for the library.
After that, no significant provision was made for the library for several years.
