Madison Singers launch another exciting year

RICHMOND — The Madison Singers, the Richmond Area Arts Council’s adult choir, began rehearsals Aug. 27, but the group still welcomes members.

It is open to anyone interested in singing and working with, Dr. Richard Waters, one of the best choral conductors and music educators in Kentucky.

The group rehearses each evening 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Richmond Area Arts Center, 399 W. Water Street.

The Singers present several concerts throughout the year, including a concert scheduled for Monday, Nov. 25.

Waters is director of choral activities at Eastern Kentucky University, where he directs the university’s three choral ensembles and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting and choral literature.

“Dr. Waters has just the right balance of good direction and fun that makes you feel relaxed while at the same time challenged,” said Trudy Conway, a member of the Singers, who says she lows forward to rehearsal every week.

“In his short time with the Madison Singers,  Dr. Waters has brought enthusiasm and energy to the group and we are looking forward to working with him on our Winter Concert,” said another member. “In rehearsals, he is efficient, effective, and funny!”

Before coming to EKU in 2011, Waters was director of choral activities at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., for eight years. In 2008 he received the DSU Foundation Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

His choirs have performed in several notable national and international venues, including Carnegie Hall (NYC), Washington National Cathedral (DC), York Minster, Christ Church Cathedral (Oxford), St. Bride’s Church (London) Salzburg Cathedral, Karlskirche (Vienna), and St. Nicholas Church (Prague).

He received his bachelor of music degree in music education from James Madison University, a master of music in choral conducting from the Hartt School of Music, and a doctor of musical arts in choral conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

A lifelong church musician, he has served churches in Connecticut, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia. A Virginia native, he began singing as a treble in the All Saints Choir of men and Boys in Richmond.

Join us for an outstanding year of fun, music making and learning! Tuition is $60 per semester. The fee is waived for EKU or high school students. For more details or to join, call 624-4242 or email debbie@artsinrichmond.org.

Most of the ladies wore extravagant hats, and the men were dressed in rather sporty attire.

The crowd got misty eyed as they listened to a choir sing “My Old Kentucky Home.”

And little guys rode horses at an iconic Kentucky location.

The food was pretty good, too, including the obligatory hot brown and chocolate pecan pie.

This was neither the Kentucky Derby or Churchill Downs, however.
