Still time to join Madison Singers’s spring semester

RICHMOND — It’s not too late to join the Madison Singers for their spring semester.

Rehearsals are conducted every Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Richmond Area Arts Center, 399 W. Water St.

Repertoire for the Singers’ May 19 concert at First Christian Church will include Franz Schubert’s “Mass in G Major” with orchestra as well as a number of Aaron Copland songs including: “The Little Horses,” “Zion’s Walls,” “The Golden Willow Tree,” “At the River” and “Ching-a-ring Chaw.”

The Singers are conducted by Dr. Richard Waters, director of choral activities at Eastern Kentucky University, where he is an associate professor of music. He directs the university’s three choral ensembles and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting and choral literature.

Rehearsals are fun and educational enabling singers to improve their vocal and musical skills in a non-threatening environment.  “I look forward to Tuesday evenings and singing with this outstanding choir,” said one of the singers after a recent rehearsal.

A graduate of James Madison University, Waters earned a master of music degree in choral conducting from the Hartt School of Music and doctorate of musical arts in choral conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Waters maintains an active schedule as published composer, clinician and adjudicator. He served as president-electof College/University Choirs of Mississippi ACSDA, and was poster session coordinator for the 2011 ACDA National Conference in Chicago.

He resides in Lexington with his wife and children.

Join us for an outstanding year of fun and music making! Tuition is $60 per semester. The fee is waived for EKU or high school students. For more details or to become a member, call 859-624-4242 or email debbie@artsinrichmond.org.

Most of the ladies wore extravagant hats, and the men were dressed in rather sporty attire.

The crowd got misty eyed as they listened to a choir sing “My Old Kentucky Home.”

And little guys rode horses at an iconic Kentucky location.

The food was pretty good, too, including the obligatory hot brown and chocolate pecan pie.

This was neither the Kentucky Derby or Churchill Downs, however.
