RAAC Celtic Festival is Friday

RICHMOND — Irish music, dancing and food will be featured as the Richmond Area Arts Council celebrates Kentucky’s Celtic heritage Friday evening.

The event is from 6 to 8 p.m. at RAAC, 399 W. Water St.

Patrons will enjoy Irish stew, delectable desserts, drinks, music, dancing and more, said Deborah Kidd, RAAC executive director.

The stews and desserts will be prepared by some of Richmond’s best chefs, and guests will get to vote on who has the best stew, she said. Prizes and bragging rights will be awarded to the top three.

Guests also will enjoy the traditional Irish music of the Labhras Draper Family, a musical family providing lively Irish entertainment from 6 to 6:55 p.m. and 7:40 to 8 p.m. They will play many of the traditional instruments and perform authentic Celtic music.

From 7 to 7:35 p.m., guests will be enthralled as the McTeggart Irish Dancers from Lexington perform, Kidd said. The McTeggart School of Irish Dance was established in 1939 at Cork, Ireland. The first director was Peg McTeggart, the eldest of four sisters, all of them champion Irish dancers.

One sister, Maureen McTeggart Hall, immigrated to the United States in 1958. She began teaching dance in 1976 in Denver and now lives in Fresno, Calif., where she still maintains a school. She travels to teach dancers at her other schools in Lexington, Oklahoma City, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Salt Lake City and New Orleans.

Admission, which includes food and entertainment, is $15. For more details or tickets, call 624-4242 or email debbie@artsinrichmond.org.

Most of the ladies wore extravagant hats, and the men were dressed in rather sporty attire.

The crowd got misty eyed as they listened to a choir sing “My Old Kentucky Home.”

And little guys rode horses at an iconic Kentucky location.

The food was pretty good, too, including the obligatory hot brown and chocolate pecan pie.

This was neither the Kentucky Derby or Churchill Downs, however.
