Ballroom, social dance classes at RAAC

Special to the Register

RICHMOND — Learn to ballroom dance at RAAC!

Dance categories covered during eight weeks of classes beginning Feb. 10 include waltz, rumba, cha-cha and swing.

The beautiful Grand Hall in the Richmond Area Arts Center is the perfect place to learn to dance or refresh your steps. The classes will take place 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays from Feb. 10 through March 31.

Tuition is $75.

The instructor for this wonderful class is Jim Johns. Jim’s interest in ballroom dance began in the early 1980s when he took a class at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Lexington. All he wanted was to be able to dance at social events, but he ended up studying for almost 10 years and became an accomplished ballroom dancer.

After leaving Arthur Murray, Jim decided to share his skills with others and taught some evening classes for the Madison County community.

Jim teaches many popular dances, but says his favorite is swing because “it is a really fun dance that can be done to such a wide variety of music and at many different types of social events.”

Asked what has caused him to continue teaching for so long, he says, “It gives me great pleasure when a couple who started out knowing nothing about dancing leaves my class able to enjoy dancing together. Some of my students have also become my friends and have returned to class year after year to practice and learn new steps.”

A native of Richmond and graduate of Madison Central High School, Jim works in Eastern Kentucky University’s Conferencing and Events Department. In his spare time between dance sessions, he enjoys polishing his golf skills or spending time with his granddaughter.
