January class to make Boonesborough Market Basket

Special to the Register

RICHMOND — The Richmond Area Arts Council Basket Guild’s January basket class take place Jan. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the the Stained Glass Room of the Richmond Area Arts Center, 399 W. Water St.

Janice Luxon, the instructor for this class, describes the basket as a 9-by-12 inch market design with an inserted hand-carved oak handle. The basket sides are made of two different weave designs split in half that are brought together at the top and woven as one.

Janice says, “This is a very useful basket for our busy lives and attractive enough to use on a daily basis.”

Luxon has always held a passion for arts and crafts, and her weaving talent has progressed over the years. Not only does she weave beautiful baskets and can tell you a descriptive history about each, Mrs. Luxon has taught basket making for several years at numerous locations in the Madison County area such as 4-H Clubs, basket guilds, The Gallery on Main, Waco, White Hall, and Mayfield elementary schools and, of course, the Richmond Area Arts Center.

Tuition for the January basket class is $60, and will include everything the weaver will need to complete the basket.

“New to basket weaving? Don’t worry,” said Deborah Kidd, RAAC executive director. “We always welcome beginners and are eager to help and share in different styles of weaving.”
