BREAKING: Madison County police looking for man near Richmond Centre

Man ran from officers after being stopped on foot along I-75

RICHMOND — Several police agencies are looking for a man who ran from a Richmond police officer after he was stopped Friday while walking on the Exit 87 on-ramp.

Around 11 a.m., the officer saw the man and stopped to tell him he couldn’t walk on the interstate, according to Chief Larry Brock.

As the officer was checking his ID, the man ran away toward Richmond Centre. The officer pursued him on foot.

The man ran behind Jack’s BP gas station and then into the Logan’s restaurant parking lot, according to Bobby Bowen, who said he witnessed the chase.

The man hopped over a fence and ran across the interstate onto Leighway Drive, but then crossed back over I-75 toward Richmond Centre, Bowen said.

At that point, the driver of a van saw the lone officer chasing the man and followed him behind Hastings. The driver blocked the man in with his van and got out to apprehend him, Bowen said.

The man then jumped off a 15-foot drop behind Hastings and ran toward a nearby barn.

At that point, local law enforcement officers converged on the scene, and the K-9 unit from the Berea Police Department was brought in to track the man.

Scanner traffic during the pursuit indicated the man took off his red shirt and may have injured his leg when he jumped off the small cliff.

Richmond police and Madison County sheriff’s deputies tracked him into a wooded area, but he was last seen entering the area near Brookline subdivision, according to scanner traffic. Police currently are canvassing the area.

Brock was not able to provide information about whether there were warrants for the man’s arrest, but his identity is known.
